What companions can and cannot do
To set the right expectations, here's a clear breakdown of the scope of a companion's role. The listed fee covers a maximum of 2 passengers per booking who need a companion.
What companions do
- Stay with the elder(s) from check-in through arrival on the same flight.
- Help coordinate airline wheelchair assistance at check-in, transit, and arrival.
- Guide elders through security, boarding, transit, immigration, and baggage claim.
- Assist with baggage drop and collection using trolleys or porters.
- Help with communication — speaking with airline/airport staff on their behalf.
- Provide companionship and reassurance throughout the journey.
- Cover up to 2 passengers per booking who need a companion (the listed fee is for a maximum of 2 passengers).
What companions do not do
- Physically carry the elder's luggage — porters and trolleys are used for that.
- Provide medical care, administer medication, or act as a nurse or caregiver.
- Lift, transfer, or physically move the elder (e.g., in and out of wheelchairs).
- Assist with personal care such as bathing, toileting, or dressing.
- Guarantee specific seating arrangements — seat changes depend on the airline.
- Pay for any airline fees, upgrades, food, or incidentals on the elder's behalf.
